IMPORTANT -- Change in Grading Procedures
(Dec. 4, 2007)

Dear Colleagues:

I write to bring to your attention an issue of paramount and immediate importance -- a change in grading procedures necessitated by the implementation of Web Grading using the Banner system for the Fall 2007 semester.

The University College and the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services have developed several quick and easy training resources for your use and reference, including a 4-minute on-line tutorial, "frequently asked questions (and their answers)," and a list of individuals from each school or college who are knowledgeable about the procedures and who have offered to help colleagues.  To access these resources, simply log-in to "eServices" and click on the "Faculty Services" tab.  The grading resources will be at the bottom of the page.

In addition, overviews of the new grading procedures will be given in 30-minute intervals Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Sanger 1-044; Thursday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Student Commons Richmond Salons; Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon in Sanger 1-044; and Wednesday, Dec. 12, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Commons Theater.

Requirements of the Web Grading system may necessitate changes in the manner in which many of us have approached the assignment of final grades in the past.  Accordingly, I highly recommend that you:

  1. access the resources that I have outlined as soon as possible;
  2. determine grades for each student before beginning the process of entering them into the Web Grading system;
  3. double-check the grades that you have entered for accuracy before clicking the "submit" button; and
  4. importantly, enter your grades before the deadline of noon on December 19, 2007.

As always, I appreciate your support of these changes and the new Banner system.  And I look forward to working with you as we continue to refine our processes.

Sincerely,

Stephen D. Gottfredson
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
